What test and tag actually involves

Test and tag is the routine safety check for electrical equipment that plugs into a power point. Each item gets a visual inspection of the lead, plug and casing, then an electrical test with a portable appliance tester. Items that pass are tagged with the test date so everyone can see they’ve been checked.

In Australia, this work is set out in AS/NZS 3760, the standard for in-service safety inspection and testing of electrical equipment.

What we check

Leads and plugs

Cuts, crushed sections, exposed wires and loose or bent pins.

Casing and housing

Cracks, burn marks, missing covers and other physical damage.

Earth continuity

Checking the earth path on earthed (Class I) equipment.

Insulation and leakage

Electrical tests that show whether insulation is breaking down.

Leads and power boards

Extension leads and power boards are tested too, not just appliances.

Tag and record

Each item tested is tagged and recorded in your documentation.

Common questions

We’ll show you which item failed and why. It shouldn’t be used again until it has been repaired or replaced.

It depends on where the equipment is used. AS/NZS 3760 sets intervals ranging from every three months on construction sites to every five years for some low-risk equipment. We’ll let you know what applies to your site.

Each item only needs to be unplugged for a short time while it’s tested. Let us know if some equipment can’t be switched off during the day and we’ll plan around it.

Every job includes tags and labels on the tested items, electrical safety documentation and a Certificate of Compliance for your business.

The minimum charge is $80 (+GST), which includes the first 20 items. After that, items are $2.20 to $3.90 (+GST) each. See the pricing page for worked examples.
